When our team heard about the work that the Ronald McDonald House in Austin does to support families with children undergoing medical care, we were excited to help out. Last week, we put together a healthy lunch for 20 families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Eric Olszewski, Patient IO’s multi-talented culinary enthusiast and software developer, led the charge as Master Chef while the rest of our team served as eager apprentices.
When we arrived at the Ronald McDonald House, we were immediately welcomed as part of the community by workers and volunteers who dedicate their time to helping families in need. As we prepared lunch for the families, we saw the care that the Ronald McDonald House put into the home. Residents in the house are treated with meals, snacks, toiletries, and most importantly, private rooms in which they could rest while caring for their children.
Putting Patient IO’s Work in Perspective
As a healthcare company, Patient IO emphasizes importance of putting a human face to all those that we serve. For families with a sick child, coordinating care can mean navigating a complex web of treatments, appointments, and insurance. The Ronald McDonald House is an important respite from the difficulty that comes along with managing complex or chronic medical conditions – it serves as a home-away-from-home where families receive the type of support that can make a big difference during a trying time.
This volunteering experience helped me put the work that we do at Patient IO into perspective. Patient IO’s mission, “to reduce the frustration of managing chronic conditions,” is something we work toward on a daily basis with our care coordination software. However, our empathy for the difficulties patients face extends beyond our own four walls.
By helping provide a meal to families and patients, we connected with the community that Patient IO helps. Seeing families and patients in person helped me remember that ultimately, we want to make the lives and health of those around us better, and meeting basic needs like meals is the first step.
How to Get Involved
It’s also important to note that the Ronald McDonald House Charities relies on volunteers and donations from the community to operate. If you’d like to give back to the Central Texas community, please visit rmhc-ctx.org/get-involved.Volunteer or Donate
